Submission to Skills Plan
for Tasmanian Agriculture

Tasmanian Women in Agriculture (TWiA) have had an ongoing interest in the promotion of skills and career pathways in agriculture for a number of years now. We have 2 main areas of interest:

1. The promotion of agriculture as a viable career path for young people. Activities we have been involved include the sponsorship of high school students intending to study agriculture at tertiary levels; involvement in agricultural careers expos; and, most recently, partnering CWA and Rural Youth in commissioning the Rural Futures Report which identifies strategies to increase participation of the 15 – 25 year age bracket in rural industries training.

2. Advocating the needs of women in both training and workforce development and opportunities. This includes ensuring that industry actively engages with women to ensure they are involved in decision making and forward planning; and that training is designed to incorporate women's needs (eg flexible timing) so that they are able to access opportunities and be an active part of the rural workforce. To action these interests, T.W.I.A. have recently lodged a submission to the Skills Plan for Tasmanian Agriculture.

See News and Events for details of this submission. Our thanks to Ruth Hall and fellow members of the Executive for their great effort.
